Two adults who are exactly similar in height aren't likely to weigh the same amount. This is because body weight depends on factors such as bone structure (small medium or large frame) and the proportion of body fat compared to greater muscle.
Body Mass Index ( BMI) evaluates your weight relative to your height. BMI can provide a valuable indicator to determine whether your weight is above or below a healthy range.
BMI is calculated by:
- Dividing the weight(kg) per your height(m)
- Dividing the answer by your height(m) in order to determine your BMI
If your BMI is more than 25, you're into the overweight category. If your weight rises above a healthy range, the increased body fat levels are associated with a higher chance of developing health issues like high blood pressure, elevated LDL cholesterol levels Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and some types of cancer. A BMI lower than 18.5 is classified as underweight and if the low body weight is a result of a diet that is not as healthy and a deficient intake of nutrients is probable.
Are the results always reliable? It's essential to recognize that BMI is only a reference for healthy weight ranges as well as health risk for adults. It does not always accurately reflect the entire picture. Individuals with higher amounts of muscle, such as body builders and athletes may not be correctly classified as overweight. Also, those with smaller frames and smaller amounts of muscle mass, including the elderly and certain ethnic groups, may be classified as a healthy weight, even though they carry more weight than their body type. BMI is a better indicator of your health when it is paired by the waist hip ratio, which measures where the body fat is distributed.
